What does electricity come from?

From coal to renewables — where South Africa's power actually comes from.

Part 2 of 6

What does electricity come from?

Flip a switch and the light comes on — but where did that power actually come from? In South Africa, most of our electricity is still generated by burning coal, a fuel that comes from deep underground and leaves a heavy toll on the health of mining communities and the air we all breathe. But coal isn't the only option. Around the world, and increasingly here at home, energy is being generated from the sun, the wind, and other renewable sources that don't run out and don't pollute in the same way. This module walks through where our electricity really comes from today, and what the alternatives look like. Watch both videos, then take the quiz to check your understanding.
